The Ladd / Hummer™ 6.2 performs sputter coating, a cold process in which ions impacting a metal source dislodge metal atoms. The atoms disperse throughout the process chamber to uniformly coat irregularly shaped specimens without thermal damage. Sputter coating produces high quality coatings whose thickness is repeatable and easily controlled. Cold, fast sputter rates require less time, giving you more time for microscope examinations.

Technical Notes

The coater has a gold target that was measured to have about 0.5 mm of thickness left. The unit was connected to an argon source and has an integrated Edwards E2M1.5 pump. We changed the pump oil before testing. The chamber glass is brand new. Upon starting, the unit pumps down quickly. After two bleeding cycles, we turned on the voltage and adjusted the gas flow and voltage to achieve 15 mA of current. Purple glow can be clearly seen. Upon shutdown, the chamber was vented automatically. A glass slide was coated, and the coated layer appeared uniform. The in-plane resistance was measured with a multimeter and found to be in the tens of ohms.
